GRANTS FOR ROADING.
ECONOMY OF GOVERNMENT.
PROTEST AT MOUNT EDEN.
A protest against the action of tho Government in proposing to withdraw tho annual grants of £200,000 from the Public Works Fund and £35,000 from the Consolidated Fund for national roading under tho Main Highways Board was made at a meeting of the Mount Eden Borough Council last evening. Mr. W. H. Naglo said that the step was a retrograde one, and local bodies might find tnafc the revenue from the petrol-tax and the heavy traffic fees would bo undermined. The progress of tho country depended upon its roading, and expenditure in this direction should be the last in which the Government should attempt to economise. A resolution embodying the council's opposition was passed unanimously.
