INNOVATION AT DUNEDIN.

MONTHLY REVIEW OF BOOKS

DUNEDIN, Tuesday

An interesting innovation that has been decided upon by the Dunedin Athenaeum authorities is the issue of a monthly bulletin. In addition to appropriate and informative literary notes the latest book issues aro givon thumbnail reviews. Subscribers arc to receive tho first copy free of charge, but the future issues will be charged for at one penny for each copy.

"The committee has decided to make an experiment in the issue of an informal monthly bulletin which, it trusts, may be of intCi'cst and use to the members of tho Athenaeum," states tho journal, "Briefly, the idea is to supply short notes on two matters, first, the progress of the institution and, second, current literature as it arrives from abroad. It is thought that, considering the mass of, in particular, fiction, that is placed 011 the shelves, a guide to books worth reading might lie attempted through short critiques by readers. ".Members are asked to assist the commit lee by supplying short, frank notices of any books they may have read. The success of tho bulletin vviil be assured if the effort is co oporaiive " Statistical information of the remarkable progress of tho library includes tho report that book issues for the past six months reached the record of 87,425, exclusive of magazines in circulation. Lor 1925 the total issue was 77,459.
