WAIKATO COUNTY ROADS.

DAMAGE CAUSED BY RAIN

PURCHASE OF EXTRA GRADER

[nv TEI.EGRAFII. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. J

HAMILTON. Tuesday

The Waikato County Council met today, the chairman, .Mi'. T. llinton, presiding. It was decided to levy r. special rate of -Jd in the pound on the capital value of ratable property in the area recently severed from the Piako County. A resolution was passed raising a loan of £750 over the Taupiri Hiding for a worker's dwelling. The engineer was authorised to purchase two new motor-lorries and a motorgrader. It was decided that the financial position of the county did not warrant a contribution toward the earthquake relief fund.

The registrar of the Auckland University College forwarded a contribution of £2O toward the cost of roading in the Taupiri Hiding. In Iti.s report (lie engineer, -Mr. A. A. Woodwaid, stated that the , HamiltonPaeroa main highway bad been regraded twice during the month and placed in good order. The unpaved portion of this road had been regraded several times and the tar-scaled surface was in good order. Although difficulty had been experienced in securing shinglo for the Pokcrio-Waihi main highway the surface was in good condition. Further metal patching had been done o i the Taupiri Orini Road and the surface had been tolled. The Ten-foot Road had been regraded and repaired throughout. Slips had been cleared on the Ivainui Road and maintenance work carried out. On the Narrows-Tauwhare Road, from the I'lack llridgo to Matangi, about 70 chains of tho surface had been scarified and rolled, and about 50 cubic yards of metal spread. At tho conclusion of bis report, the engineer stated that tho excessively wet weather experienced during the past month and the constantly increasing traffic had made it difficult to keep down expenses. The roads, however, were in fair order to meet the heavy demand made upon them during the milking season.

A close policy regarding the declaration of additional main highways was indicated in a letter from tho Main Highways Hoard, which stated that numerous recommendations had been received from district councils for the conversion of secondary roads to main highways. Over 2000 miles of road had been included in these recommendations, or approximately 60 per cent, of the total mileage of secondary highways in the Dominion. The hoard was not at present in a position to adopt tho whole or even a substantial part of (ho recommendations received.
