SPORT OF CYCLING.

MANUKAU AMATEUR CLUB.

WHITTEN THE TIME CHAMPION

CONSISTENT JUNIOR RIDER

Racing conditions were far from ideal last Saturday when the Mannkau Amateur Cycling Club conducted two road races. A couple of exceptionally heavy showers accompanied by a strong westerly wind did not make racing at all inviting. Nevertheless, (he 5i miles junior and the 22 miles senior time trial, were well supported.

The senior event could almost be called a novelty event for the gear used by competitors was under 69 inches. Eighteen started and only three retirements .were recorded. Riders drew for starting numbers and were sent off at intervals of 30s on an unpaced rido against the watch.

The only performer to create, any sensation was D. Fletcher, who started sixth and finished first, 2in 29s ahead of the second man to clock in. J. 11. Wade, who started thirteenth, returned the fastest time of any competitor. Wado also finished second on the scaled handicap on which lie was in re ceipt of 2m ss. He undoubtedly proved himself a nimble pedallor by clocking the fast time of 62m 275, which compares very favourably with that recorded by him in previous time trials when ho has nsed a gear which has suited him to satisfaction—C2in.

Wade Runner-up. Wade's lap times were 15m 4s, loin 16s, 16m 31s, and 15in 565, a fair example of consistent riding. His third lap was the slowest, because heavy rain was experienced during that miles. 'J his is the first trial in which Wade has returned fastest time. His aggregate time for the three held this year is 186 m 495, which makes him the runner-up for the unpaced title. J. Whitfeu, hero of the last Iwo time trials, found the low gear a big handicap to him. However, he did well under the circumstances to clock second fastest time in 65m 14s. This event decided the unpaced champion of the club, and W bitten easily accounted for the title with an aggregate time of 185 m Bs. The sealed handicap, run in conjunction with the race, had the desired effect of encouraging all starters to finish the full distance. D. Fletcher, 5m 30s, easily accounted for first place on the handicap, for hrr registered third fastest time in 63m 28s.

Good Junior Fields. Tho juniors continue to support their weekly races with splendid fields. Last Saturday 15 of the' young enthusiasts started. The winner, S. Sargent, 3m, ran away from his partner over tho last hundred yards to win by 20 yards and to record his second junior victory of the season. He has now competed in seven races and recorded two wins, a second and a third. A. H. Bowen, 3m, second, appears on tho trophy list for tho first time. Yule won the fastest time honours from Hall, tho junior champion, by three lengths. Yule's time was 15m 455, a good performance under the heavy going. He finished 57s behind the winner. The seniors will race over five laps of the Mangcrc and Ihumatao courses next Saturday, a total distance of exactly 53Jr miles. The race will be recognised as a test for the coming 50 milc-s Auckland championship event. The event will commence punctually at 2.1 d p.m., and tho junior race of 5j miles will be run off while tho senior race is in progress, but will in no way interfere with the senior competition.
