COLLECTION OF RATES.

ANNUAL BUILDING RETURNS.

Tho Mount Albert Borough Council met last evening, tho Mayor, Mr. L. E. Rhodes, presiding. It was stated that £16,000 in rates was outstanding. On tho recommendation of the joint committee, it was decided to tako legal proceedings for the recovery of rates in tho case of amounts which aro two years in arrears instead of three years as at present. The need of further relief for unemployed in tho district was emphasised by Mr. Knyes, who suggested that tho council should taiso another loan of £50.000 for this purpose. Ho quoted many cases of real hardship which had been brought under his notice. The matter was referred to tho joint committee for consideration.

Tho acting-chief postmaster, Auckland, wrote asking for further facts in regard to complaints of alleged delay in tho delivery of telegrams from tho Edendalo Post Oflicc, complaints which tho postmistress stated wero unwararited. Mr. Russell alleged it was possible to stand in tho fruit shop at the post office and heir the- contents of telegrams being telephoned to tho city. It was decided to include this in the details of tho council's complaints. Letters from religious organisations protesting against tho screening of pictures on Sunday wero roceived. It was docidcd in future to rofuso permission for Sunday screenings for commercial purposes. A protest against forcing a school girl to givo up tier seat in a tram because she was tho holder of a cpncession ticket, was made by Mr. Langley, who suggested that pressure should bo brought upon the Transport Board to reopen this question. It was decided to forward a letter of protest against tho policy adopted.

Th& building inspector reported that permits involving £142,666 were issued during tho financial year ended on March 31. Included were 116 dwellings, for which permits were valued at £88.326. 115 motor sheds, £4126. and 205 additions. £14,854 Blocks of shops and dwellings in brick and concielP were valued at £35,360. During August permits involving £27 549 were issued, including 16 dwellings.
