POPULAR MAORI'S DEATH.

RESIDENT OF TAUMARUNUI.

Tho death occurred suddenly yesterday of Mr. William Bell (Wiri To VVaihanea). a well-known resident of this district, aged 48. He was highly respected among both European and native populations. Born at Taumarunui in 1881, the son of Mr. Alexander Bell and the late Mrs. Bell (Katarina To Waihanea), chicftaincss of tho Ngatihaua and Ngati-Maniapoto tribes. Doccased took a keen interest in the church movement among natives, and was an officiating elder of the Presbyterian Church. 110 was educated at St. Stephen's and To Auto Colleges, and saw many changes in tho growth of Taumarunui. lie was chairman of the Taumarunui Maori Council. During the past 15 years Mr. Bell had boon engaged in farming, and had ono of tho best dairy farms in the district. Ho is survived by his wife (Harata Paraone), and two adopted daughters, Mrs. Cliadwick and Mrs. J. Tiwhu. A largo tangi is now in progress.
