DEVONPORT SEAFRONT.
WORK ON QUEEN'S PARADE
An ambitious civic scheme, coupled with a plan for the relief of unemployment and having as its objective 'the completion of Queen's Parade, is now well in hand at Devonport. About 55 years ago an arrangement was made with the Auckland Harbour Board to secure for Devonport a portion of the foreshore to permit 'of an esplanade 100 ft. wide from Calliopo Dock to the fort gates at North Head. Queen's Parade extends from the naval depot to the new ferry wharves, and it is hoped that when the scheme is com pleted Devonport will be able to ' bonst of an esplanade that is the most beautiful half-mile in New Zealand.
The greater part of the foreshore east of (lie wharf is now bounded by seawall and ten ace, while the evergreen o well-ordered rows of pohutukawas ami eracofill phoenix palms studded m a carpet of emerald makes a most charming setting. To provide for the continuity o the beautifying scheme the Borough Council has enlisted the co-onenUion o private owners abutting on the I a ado and financial contributions from these residents, together with Poppy Day funds and Iho Government and council subsidies, will combine to assist in an ambitious civic scheme and in providing considerable work for unemployed ex-service men. , . The Harbour Boards suction dredge plant last year deposited over 30,000 cubic yards* of spoil along Queen's Parade, and this year saw the completion of the massive sea-wall from the ferrv wharf to the Pacific Cable Board's wharf. To complete the filling-in and grassing of the area this year's Poppy Day funds have been allocated, and the work 's already well under way.
