THEFT OF CATTLE.
MAORI SENT TO PRISON.
TERM OF NINE MONTHS.
On two charges of cattle stealing a Maori, Robert Gage, 39 years of age (Mr. Rudd), was sentenced in tho Supreme Court yesterday to nine months' imprisonment with hard labour. Mr. Rudd said the prisoner had been employed in the Thames district for many years. His employer for tho past four years said ho was a very good worker. The cattle taken were two heifers and two calves. Restitution •of £l4 10s. the value of the cattle, had been made. The accused had not been in any serious trouble for 20 years. Mr. Justice Ostler: The report says bo was convicted of theft in 1926. Mr. Rudd said he understood that drink had been the actual trouble. Tho cattle were sold in a hotel bar after the accused had been drinking. His employer was prepared to take him back again. ' His, Honor said the prisoner had not n very good record. There was a recent conviction for theft. He had not a good report from the police or from the probation officer. Cattle-stealing was a serious crime, and prisoner could not be admitted to probation The sentence would be imprisonment with hard labour for nine months.
