TALKATIVE PARROT.
APPEARANCE IN COURT.
EXHIBIT IN THEFT CHARGE.
Produced .in Court as ono of the things which the police alleged had been stolen from a houso in Great North Road, a pink and grey parrot caused considerable amusement in tho Polico Court yesterday by its interjections, which did not cease until tho bird was removed and detained in the prisoners' room until (bo end of the case.
Two young men, Douglas Henry Chalmers, a taxi-driver, and Allan Gordon Wright, a labourer, were charged with, stealing tho parrot from a houso at 57, Great North Road, whilo an additional chargo of stealing a quantity of clothing and silverware was preferred against Wright. Both pleaded not guilty.. The owner of tho parrot, George William Marten, stated the bird was kept in tho wash-house at the rear of the house, his family occupying a flat on the first floor. On Saturday morning it was missing. On Friday evening, as he came home, thoro was a taxi-cab standing outside his gate, and when ho opened tho front door ho saw tho two accused and a woman in a room on the ground floor, in the apartment occupied by Mrs. Bovaird, the owner of tho house, who was away. Witness later saw them carrying clothing from the house to the taxi-cab. _ , , . Chalmers stated his taxi had been hired by Wright, who had stated he was going to tho house to remove his goods, as he was leaving his lodging and moving to another apartment. Wright stated ho had gone for his luggage, which ho removed to his new flat. Ho did not take any articles which were not his. The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, dismissed both charges, making an order for the return of the property to the owners.
