TASMANIAN FLOODS.
PAYMENT OF RELIEF.
THE PROCEDURE DESCRIBED
Moro than 2000 letters of credit for a total amount of over £IIO,OOO had been issued by the committee of the Tasmanian Flood Relief Fund up to the, cud of July. Describing the work of (lie committee, the chairman, Mr. R. Lewis Parker, who was in MelLounio lecently, said: "All sufferers thtough the (loods are now on their way toward rehabilitation. For this wo owe practically everything to the genoiosity of Victoria."
Persons who suffered loss in the floods, said Mr. Parker, were invited to submit claims to the committee. Claims for articles that the trustees of tho fund did not consider to bo necessaries, such as motorcars, musical insttuinenls, poultry, animal pets, books arid ornaments, were nnf recognised, and cflorts were concentrated upon restoring furnituro, implements and clothing and repairing build-
nigs. Claims for amounts up to £IOO were paid in full and up to 50 per cent, was paid on claims for greater amounts. Do voted honorary work was done by valuators a; pointed bv local authorities. The grei'est. single payment was for about £3OO. the average, being about £45. In cases whrro farmers had sustained losses amounting to as much as £2OOO it was lossiblo to give relief to tho extent of only ahout f.?50, but this had made possible 'ho purchase of seed and manure.
