LAPSE OF OVER 40 YEARS. Few subscribers would think to return a book after the lapso of 43 years, but the other day two volumes •yverc handed to an astonished assistant librarian at tho Wanganui Library. The man who brought tho books in stated that 110 took them out in 1886, and, on leaving Wanganui about that time, packed them with his belongings. He had only just returned to this city after the long absence of 43 years. Tho man would not give his name, but after leaving tho books walked out again. Possibly ho had visions of being billed for keeping tho books over tho period allowed, a matter of merely £2O, according to the rule».
