CIVIC FAREWELL.

OTAHUHU RHODES SCHOLAR.

CHEQUES AND MEDAL PRESENTED

A civic farewell was tendered by residents of Otahuhu to Mr. Ernest Bailey, Rhodes scholar, in the public hall last evening. The Mayor, Mr. H. T. Clements, presided over a large gathering. Among those on the platform were Mr. Robert McVeagh, representing the Auckland Law Society; Lieutenant-Colonel Northcroft, representing tho Auckland University College Council; Professor Paterson, representing tho professorial board of the University College; Mr. R. McLeod, representing the Auckland University College Students' Association; Brother Borgia, of tho Sacred Heart College; Mr. U. G. McElrov, of the Auckland University College Law Students' Association; Professor Algie; Father Dumphy, of St. Joseph's Convent primary school; and Mr. A. Murdock, of the Otahuhu district school.

In his opening remarks the Mayor referred to tlio high honour which had como to .Otahuhu by Air. Bailey being chosen a Rhodes scholar for 1929. The civic farewell was an expression of the high esteem in which Mr. Bailey was held by those with whom he had spent most of his life.

On behalf of the residents of Otahuhn the Mayor presented Mr. Bailey with a substantial cheque', as a token of esteem, and charged him to purchaso with a portion of it a souvenir to keep constantly before him as a reminder of the people ho was leaving. On behalf of the Otahuhu branch of the Hibernian Society the Mayor also presented Mr. Bailey with a gold medal. Air. AlcElroy, on behalf of the Auckland University College Law Students' Association, presented Air. Bailey with a cheque, and read a letter of congratulation from tho president of the society. In reply, Air. Bailey expressed his ap pronation of the honour accorded him and said he hoped that the cordiality shown him on leaving the district would also be expressed on his return. Airs. Ernest Bailey, mother of Air. Bailey, was proscntcd with a bouquet by the Mayor.

There was a large number of speakers, and tho addressos wero interspersed with musical items by leading Auckland artists.
