In declaring tho exhibition open, Miss Melville announced that one of the lenders of picturos. Mrs. Lushington, had intimated that she did not intend to ask for her pictures back. The two prints which she had lent, an engraver's proof of a mezzotint, " A Young Mendicant," by Valentine Green (1739-1813), and a stipple engraving, " Captain Thomas Coram," by William twitter (1754-1802), after William Hogarth, would be added to the Art Gallery. Referring to the success of previous loan exhibitions, two of which were held in 1927, Miss Melville remarked that when a new art gallery was built it was hoped to have a special room set apart for tho exhibition of loan collections at frequent intervals. Such exhibitions performed a valuable educational and cultural work. She gratefully acknowledged the loan ot pictures by 18 residents of Auckland and expressed the; indebtedness of tho committee to tho librarian of the Turnbull Library, Wellington, who had sent nine prints for exhibition.
