FORESTS IN SOUTHLAND. INQUIRY BY TIMBER EXPERT. [iJY TELEGRAPH. —OWN" CORRESPONDENT. ] DUNEDIX, Thursday. Tho timber expert of the Railways Department. Mr. W. Poynton. has just finished a visit to the native forests of Southland. Part of his duty is to find out how far Now Zealand wood can be used fijr the department's purposes.

It is understood that as a result of this tour in the south arrangements have been made whereby a considerable! quantity of silver birch and other native woods will be properly dried at tho mills, thus overcoming ono of the obstacles to the use ot such timbers. Sawmillers and others arc agrcod that a drying period of about two and a-half years suffices to bring this wood into a condition suitable, not only for waggon building, but for the finer branch of car construction.
