| IMPROVING THE QUALITY. VIEWS OF THE MEAT BOARD. " The suitability of the sol! sn<! climate of the Dominion to grow Englishgrass pastures may bo considered one of our most valuable resources, and produces the quality of meat desired in Britain," states the seventh annual report of tho New Zealand Meat Producers Board. " Tho increasing use of suitable fertilisers in top-dressing is now having a marked effect on the carrying capacity of our pastures, and may also make great changes jn regard to _ shortening theperiod of winter scarcity. These are most important factors contributing to tho continued increase in our filieep Hocks, so that, apart from the breaking-in of fresh land, tho areas already in pasture aro bringing increasod prosperity to this Dominion. With tho dependence which this Dominion places on its. grass pastures for the production of its main primary products, it is of vital importance that we should endeavour to increase our returns from these natural resources. Topdressing is perhaps the greatest single factor of influence in the increase of our main primary products, and, combined with tho breeding of high-class stock, there is nothing that will so improve the quality of our meat. " It is pleasing to note from the roport of tho Medical Officer of Health for tho City of London that New Zealand = has such a fine record on Smithf.eld from a veterinary point of view, showing tho healthy condition of this Dominion's herds and flocks, and reflecting credb on tho rigid system of veterinary inspection adopted in this Dominion under the Department of Agriculture. New Zealand s record is much better than other ing countries who ship meat to the United Kingdom, which is a most valuable asset, and shows how important it is that we should adopt every safeguard to keep onr flocks and herds dean from contamination 4 from outside infected sources., •-
