CHARGES TO AIRMEN.
USE OF SPORTS GROUND.
PROPOSAL AT WHANGAREI.
[nr TELEGItArH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WTTANfIAREI. Tuesday.
Airmen visiting Whangnrci recently made use of Kensington Park as a landing ground, and from thero carried on commercial flights. Sports bodies using the park have to contribute 10 per cent, of their takings to the Borough Council, and at tho timo the council considered the question of charging airmen in a like manner. Tho matter was referred to tho Municipal Association for a ruling, and last evening tho association's reply Mas received. This stated that the question was entirely one for tho local body' to settle. Mr. L. J. Brake moved that a charge of 10 per cent, on their takings bo made to aviators. Whilo favouring a charge of 5 per cent. Mr. A. T. Brainsby snid that in aviation the cost in depreciation and oil often amounted to betwoen 40 and 50 per cent., which was much more than in any other sport. It would be wrong to tax promoters unduly. He suggested that a rental of so much per day should be imposed. Mr. Brake's motion that the charge be 10 per cent, was lost, as was also one moved by Mr. Brainsby that tho charge bo 5 per cent. A. suggestion by Mr. A. M. 'Rust hat tho matter be left to the Parks Commitleo to report upon was adopted.
