DIVERSION OF A CREEK.

PROPOSED FLOOD PREVENTION

[by telegraph.—own correspondent.] TE AROHA, Tuesday. The Piako County Council met yesterday, Mr. W. R. Lowry, presiding. Tho chairman stated that Mr. Laird had lodged an objection to the Valley Road loan. The county solicitor was instructed to arrange a date for hearing .the objection before a magistrate. Reference was made by the chairman to a creek winding through the county in tho vicinity of Starkey's Road. In heavy rain, he said, this creek backed up and- flooded five chains of road and the adjoining property. If a short cut were mado through a bank the position would bo considerably improved. Tho work would not bo costly. The chairman and tho engineer were given power to interview Mr. Hawke, the owner of tho property, to ask his permission to divert tho creek.

Mr. Lowry said a complaint had been made that tho road from tho Public Works Department's quarry at Maukoro had been cut to pieces by contractors carrying metal. The settlers wero unable to get away from their farms except by using sleclges. It was decided to write to tho Lands Department asking that tho contractors bo instructed to repair tho damage. The resident engineer of tho Public Works Department drow attention to the condition of the Waitoa-Maukoro main highway. He said tho bitumen sealed portion required immediate attention to prevent the road going back boyond a state of repair. The matter was left in the hands of the engineer and Mr. Walters. The Public Works Department wroto concerning a slip on tho highway between No. 9 Road and Whakahoro Road. Portion of tho road, it was stated, had moved into tho drain, leaving tho road only six foot wide. Mr. Walters said tho matter was ono for tho Waitoa Drainage Board. It was decided to draw tho board's attention to tho complaint.
