UNEMPLOYED RELIEF WORKS.

EXTRA BUSES AT RUSH HOURS

The Northcoto Borough Council met last evening, tho Mayor, Mr. A. E. Greenslade, presiding.

Mr. H. Shaw forwarded £lB, net proceeds of a concert given by Miss Ebba Gunman's pupils for tho relief of tho unemployed. It was decided to forward a letter of thanks to those responsible for raising the money, and to apply for tho Government subsidy.

The district engineer of Public Works notified tho approval of a pound for pound unemployment relief subsidy of £25 for work at the lower end of Valley Road, in connection with the expenditure of the Poppy Day donation from the Returned Soldiers' Association.

Authority was received from the Main Highways Board for tho expenditure of a subsidy of £55 on a basis of £2 for £1 on the total cost of £B2 for tho repair of Raleigh Road, used as a detour load while the paving in concreto of the Waitcmata county section of Onewa Road was in progress. Tho waterworks engineer reported that 2,456,500 gallons of water had been used in tho borough during tho past month. Tho surface of Lake Pupuke was two inches higher than in tho previous month, being inches abovo high-tido level. Mr. E. J. Eraser wrote stating that the matter of putting on extra buses at rush hours was receiving tho closo attention of tho Waiteinata Bus Company. However, tho extreme diherence ueuioen tho volume of fair weather and wet weather traffic in Northcote created a difficulty not easilv overcome.

The resignation of Miss Ella Brunton as town clerk's assistant was received with regret, and good wishes were extended to her oil her approaching marriage. Appreciation of her services in tho ofTico for tho past six years was recorded. Tho Rugby Union Football Club wrote suggesting that as tho members were Northcoto residents and undertook to keep the ground in such order as was required for their games, tho club should be allowed the privilege of using tho municipal football ground without charge. It was decided to inform tho club that no charge would bo made for tho ground, but that tho cost of tho freight of tho league's horse-mower would bo debited jointly to tho Association and Rugby Union clubs as their share of tho ground preparation.
