FAILURE ON PROBATION.

YOUTH SENT TO BORSTAL

I Campbell, said that accused, who was I only 17, was befcro the Children's Court on April 17 on a chargo of theft, and was then placed on probation. A fortnight later lie appeared in the Police Court, when he was fined £5, and this ! amount had not yet been paid. Accused had been working near Hamilton,' and although ho had been warned not to frequent hotels, racecourses and billiard saloons, he had done so. "lie wrote this letter to another boy, and it came into my possession," concluded Mr Campbell. "It is the most filthy thing I have ever read." , "There is only ono place for him," the magistrate remarked, after reading the letter "He is sentenced to Borstal for two years. He has had his chance, several chances, in fact, but has not taken advantage of them." Stated by the police to have been waving his arms round and to have tried to fight everyone, John McDonald, aged 44, charged with being disorderly while drunk in Lome Street, admitted having been drunk, but denied that lie behaved in a disorderly manner. He was fined £l, in default three days' imprisonment, the magistrate refusing to allow tirno to p^yCharges of stealing 51 egg-crates, of a total valuo of £ll 9s 6d, tho proporty of Turners and Growers, Limited, between October 18, 1928, and March 20, 1929, wcro prefetred against Joseph Ilollis, aged 25, motor-driver, who was arrested earlier in the morning by Dctcctivc-Ser-geant Tvlcllugh. On tho application of Chief-lJetectivo Hammond, .accused was icmanded until next Monday. Mr. Bryco Hart appliod for bail, which was granted in ono surety of £SO.
