BROWN SHIELD MATCH.

WIN FOR SOUTH AUCKLAND. NORTHERN CHALLENGE FAILS. [Bl' TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORBESPONDENT.] HAMILTON, Sunday. All Association football match for t Vie Biown Shield was played at Huntly yesterday between North Auckland (challengers) and South Auckland (holders). It resulted in a win for South Auckland by 3 goals to 0 Heavy rain fell for two hours prior to the match. It eeriously affected the attendance and tho condition of the ground. The pools of water and tho slippery nnturo of the. field and tho ball militated against an exhibition of good football. The teams were very evenly matched, and tho visitors were unfortunate in liol ecoring. Four times tho ball went just over Ihe bar. The game was patchy and was largely of a defensive nature, relieved occasionally by sparkling rushes. In the first half the visitors held tho advantage, but (hey tired in tlie second half and were not equal to the dashing movements of their opponents.

North Auckland attacked early in the opening stages, but were unable to pcrietrato tho defence. P. Hunter took play into tho North Auckland quarter and shot. The goalkeeper, J. T. Y. Piatt. saved. T. Docids was given a corner. North Auckland again assumed the offensive and Marshall kicked for tho goal. The attempt was unsuccessful, as was also a second shot. South Auckland pressed and McKinstry endeavoured to score. Akcrs. Rodger and Marshall returned play to tho homo quarter, and J. Piatt and Stewart directed the ball to the net. D. Ilunter saved, and the South Auckland forwards carried play downiield into the visitors' territory. Black centred, and Liddle scored. South Auckland were agaiu attacking when half-time sounded with the Ecores:—South Auckland. 1: North Aucklaud, 11.

The patchy play which characterised the first spell gave place to brighter football after halitinie. The weather had cleared iind better combination was evident. South Auckland held the advantage for a time. Black being conspicuous in a series of interesting attacks. Jennings and Stewart, North Auckland, got possession and Rodger tried to score, but found D. Hunter, the goalie, too formidable an obstacle.

Caldwell and Hazel!, tho Northern halfbacks, returned to tho attack. P. Hunter relieved and dribbled downfield. He was unsupported and his efforts were fruitless. North Auckland rallied until T. Dodds eeiit a header back to their quarter. This movement was followed by two shots at goal, which J. T. Y. Piatt frustrated. Hazell, Caldwell and Rodger returned play to tho home team's circle and Marshall kicked. The ball went over the bar. McKinstrv, the South Auckland captain, left the field with an injured rib. South Auckland maintained their pressure, and Liddlo nearly scored. Offside play spoiled another chanco for the home team. P. Hunter gave Liddlo an opportunity to score, which was taken. The same movement was repeated,. P. Hunter and Liddle co-operating and scoring South Auckland's third goal. The game ended:—South Auckland. 3; North Auckland, 0. Mr. J. Wallace. Huntly, refereed.
