DARING MONEY ROBBERY.

SIGNED WITHDRAWAL SLIP. SUM OF £644 INVOLVED. A particularly daring robbery, involving cheques and clothing to the value of £7OO, was perpetrated at Killara, Sydney, in broad daylight a few days ago. After breaking into a house one of the thieves presented cheques for £655 at a city bank, and received £255 in cash and a bank draft for £4OO.

Recently Mr. E. C. Emcrton, who was in Queensland, forwarded liis bank passbook and a signed withdrawal slip payable to "bearer" for Ihe sum of £6-14 13s 4d, to a friend, Mr. Johnson, of Ivillara, with a request that the money should be drawn on his behalf. Mr. Johnson left the bankbook and withdrawal slip, together with an open cheque for the sum of £0 15s, in his wardrobe when he left his home for business in the morning. His wife loft the house about 10 a.m. A baker who called at the house shortly after mid-day discovered that a Icadlight of the front door had been broken, and ho informed the police, who discovered that the contents of the house had been ransacked. The house was guarded until Mr. and Mrs. Johnson returned, about 5 p.m. Mr. Johnson quickly discovered that the bankbook and its valuablo contents were missing. Seven suits were also missing from the wardrobe. <- Inquiries were made at the Circular Quay branch of the Government Savings Bank, where Air. Emcrton had his account, and it was learned that tho withdrawal slip and open cheque had been presented. Bank officials said that a man entered into the branch office about 2 p.m. and prcscutod the passbook. He was told that the total amount stated on tho withdrawal slip could not be paid immediately. " But I'm leaving in a few moments for the Malay States, and I must have the money at once,", tho man said. Subsequently it was arranged that tho man should receive the sum of £244 13s 4d in cash and a bank draft for £4OO on another city bank in settlement of tho pass book account. The open cheque was also cashed.
