OBITUARY.

MR. C. D. P. TOPLISS. [by telegraph,—own correspondent.] PAEROA, Friday The death of Mr. C. D. P. Topliss, late of Paeroa, occurred in Wellington this morning. Mr. Topliss was an old Nelson College student and for six years was the rranager of the Paeroa branch of tho National Bank of New Zealand. He was an officer in the New Zealand Rifle Brigade and served in France and in Flanders, being wounded in the Battle of the Somme in 1916, and was invalided home to New Zealand in 1917. During the six years that Mr. Topliss resided in Paeroa ho was closely associated with all sports, being a keen golfer and tennis player and a vice-president of the Rugby Union. MRS. RACHEL SARGESON. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] HAMILTON. Friday. The death occurred at Hamilton yesterday of Airs. Rachel Sargeson, widow of the late Mr. William Sargeson, at the ago of 84 years. Mrs. Sargeson was born in Belfast, Ireland, and came to New Zealand with her husband 50 years ago. Mr and Mrs, Sargeson first settled in Auckland, where Mr. Sargeson carried on business as a painter and paperhanger. Thcv subsequently removed to Hawera, and after living for some years they came to Hamilton, 12 years ago. Mr. Sargeson died eight years ago. A family of six survive. as follows:—Messrs. T. Sargeson, New Plymouth; A. M. Sargeson, Hawera; and O.S Sargeson, King Country; and Mesdames E. J. Davey and W. Runciman and Miss Sargeson, of Hamilton. MR. ROBERT SMYTHE. [by telegraph.—own correspondent. ] PALMERSTON NORTH, Friday. Tho death has occurred at Palmerston North of Mr. Robert Travers Smylhe. Mr. Smylhe was born in London and arrived in New Zealand in the sailing ship Mary Shepherd. He settled first at Auckland, then at Wellington, Napier and Gisborno. Finally ho settled at Palmerston North, where for a number of years he held tho position of accountant to the Palmerston North Gas Company. Some years ago he joined the staff of Messrs. Holben and Kirk as accountant, while his last position, in a similar capacity, was with the firm of Wills and Smytho. He is survived by a widow, ono son, Mr. P. T. Smytho, Palmerston North, and seven daughters, Mrs. W. Kells, Johnsonvillo; Mrs. C Humphreys, Wellington; Mrs. Maurice Waldegrave, Palmerston North; Mrs. James Aitken, Wangaehu; Mrs. E. R. V. Pizzy, Palmerston North; and Misses L. and W. Smytho, Palmerston North. MR. WILLIAM BILLING. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NEW PLYMOUTH. Friday Tho death occurred yesterday of Mr William Billing, of New Plymouth, at the ago of 85 years Mr. Rilling was tho eldest son of Mr. W. Billing, who came to New Zealand in tho ship Amelia Thompson. He was born in Now Plymouth in October, 1843. lie was a veteran of tho Maori War and after tho cessation of hostilities took up farming in the Frank ley Road district. Subsequently ho moved to Tataraimaka He retired to Now Plymouth about 20 years ago. Ho leaves a widow and three sons, Messrs. W. E. and 11. R. Billing, New Plymouth, and L. A. Billing, Dargaville.

MR. WILLIAM SALT,

Icy telegraph.—own correspondent. 1 WANGANUI, Friday

The death occurred at the Taihape Hos pital to-day of Mr. William Salt, bridge contractor, of Wanganui East. Mr. Salt was a well-known mountaineer, and was president of tho Ruapehu Ski Club at the time of his death, a position he had filled for about 10 years. The Government, which was appreciative of his work in con nection with the National Park, appointed him a member of the Park Board when it was formed in 1922. Mr. Salt was a prominent Freemason and was Worshipful Master of Lodge St. Andrew, Kilwinning, Wanganui, during the past year. 110 loaves a widowed mother, three sisters and two brothers, tho latter being Messrs. George Salt, of Manjzaweka, and Eli Salt, of Auckland.
