TAXATION OF LAND.
FAILURE TO MAKE RETURNS.
FOUR PROSECUTIONS IN COURT.
Failure to make returns of land for taxation purposes resulted in four prosecutions being brought in the Magistrate's Court yesterday by the Commissioner cf Taxes.
For the Taxation Department Mr. V. N. Hubble, said the cases were of a similar nature, there being no intention to defraud the department. Dilatoriness on the part of the defendants had caused extra work for officers in making adjustments.
A fine of £5 was imposed on Messrs. Turner Brothers, who it was stated had failed to furnish returns for some years. No notice had been taken of a special request made in July, 1928, said Mr. Hubble.
In the case of W. R. (Campbell it was stated no returns had been made since 1923 and the returns for the current year had been lafe. During these years an assessment of the amount had been made in the department's Auckland office. A fine of £3 was imposed. "No returns have been made in Ibis case since. 1924 and readjustments have been made by request," said Mr. Hubble, when J. O'Sullivan was charged. Defendant was fined £2 10s.
Special circumstances necessitating a late return were pleaded by counsel for New Zealand Picture Supplies, Ltd., who it was stated had continually made late returns. Counsel stated the company h"K' extensive interests throughout New Zealand and it was practically impossible to furnish the returns from the head ottice in time. ... "You will have to hurry your audit up," said the Magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, imposing a fine of £2.
