REPORTS BY DEPARTMENT.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NGATEA, Friday.

The Hauraki Plains County Council met yesterday, tho chairman, Mr. C. W. Harris, presiding. The district engineer, Public Works Department, Auckland, wrote advising that in March last his department had approved proposals for metalling 123 chains of the Kaikahu Road. He had been informed that operations had ceased after 86 chains had been metalled, leaving 37 chains fronting Crown land, on which no work had been carried out. The settlers were complaining that full effect had not been given to the original proposals and in order that suitable action might be taken the council was asked for an assurance that the 37 chains would be metalled at the earliest possible date. The chairman and the county clerk were authorised to discuss the points raised with the resident engineer to the Public Works Department. Tho Lands Department advised that with the exception of some widening of tho roadway in a few places the formation of the Ngatea-Kaihere Road had been completed and the surface had been metalled for the entire length of 3 miles 30 chains. Owing to wet weather and the possibility of some uneven settlement where the road embankment was not consolidated tho full specified quantity of metal had not been laid on some sections. Some 360 cubic yards would still bo required, but it was not proposed to spread this until next season. In -a further communication the department advised that the metalling of the clav roads between Patetonga and Morrinsville had been completed. Operations had ceased owing to unsuitable weather and the delivery of road metal would not be resumed until next, season. The contribution required from the council for next season's work was £I6OO.
