WORKERS' EDUCATION.

DEPUTATION TO MINISTER.

LARGER GRANT SOUGHT.

A deputation from tho Workers' Educational Association waited on tho Hon. IL Atmore, Minister of Education, and requested that tho Government should increase the grant to the association by £2OOO a year. Several members of Parliament were present, more particularly from the Labour benches. Mr. H. D. A eland, Christchurch, president of the association, was spokesman.He dwelt on the great growth and influence of tho movement and tho ditliculty of accomplishing tho work from a financial aspect, especially as regarded development in the country districts. Other speakers were Mrs. E. Maslen ( secretary of the Wellington district, Mr„B. Martin, president of the Auckland district, Mr. H. G. Miller, Otago, Mr. G< Malin, secretary of tho Canterbury dis, trict, and Dominion secretary. In his reply the Minister said that as far as sympathy could bo transmuted into something more concrete ho could assure them that it would bo done. Tho total amount made available by tho Government, directly or indirectly, was £6538 per annum and the Carnegie Corporation had promised a grant of £2OOO for five years for Canterbury and Otago. Tho Government would have to pay subsidies on that. A grant had been made to tho Otago University of £ISOO for five years for home science work iu country districts. Needless to say, something would lie clone, said Mr. Atmore, but tho extent of tho increased contribution tho Government would make would be a matter for consideration by his colleagues. He would bring it before Cabinet at. its next meeting. He promised to assist as far as ho could.
