OLD MOTORS SOLD.

SOME VENERABLE CONVEYANCES

GOVERNMENT VEHICLES.

Thero was little motoring left in the majority of the 27 cars and light trucks offered by auction at the Post and Telegraph Department's garage in Stanley Street yesterday. Most of the vehicles had given the best part of their lives in the postal service. Others hud been driven in from various Government departments. The drive to the auction block was probably their farewell performance under their own power. Some of the cars were frankly bought for the few spare parts they would yield- on scrapping. Most of the purchasers were mechanics and it was obvious that the man who acquired a Ford for £2 15s did not expect to start serious motoring for this outlay. 'lhc engine was in pieces and the knock-down price was almost low enough to tempt a lover of jig-saw puzzles. An old Ford for which the Agricultural Department had no further use realised ;i few pounds. The auctioneer's suggestion that the ownership of the vehicle implied that it had been "nursed" with more tare than a postal car did not stimulate the bidding. 'lhcrc was nothing to identify a venerable Ford five*soatcr from its numerous companion airs, but a few present recognised it as a police car which was recently retired after 4A years' service in Auckland. It must have performed sonic strange duties in Its official life. The running of the engine was accompanied by an ominous mechanical clatter. It was obviously in a most undesirable condition for use by a body whoso aim is to move as unobtrusively as possible. The car found an owner "for £ll 10s. A damaged postal van which recently collided with a post brought £ls and a Trojan van realised £2O. A Morris-Oxford which had most of its engine loose in the hack scat sold at £-30. The most extravagant offering of tho day, an Overland tourer, brought £4O.
