NEWMARKET BOROUGH.

DRAINAGE WORKS REPORT. The Newmarket Borough Council ir?.t last evening, the Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldj bom presiding. The Auckland City waterworks engineer wrote gating that the -City Council was prepared to sell two second hand 4in. water meters at £4O each. Ihe clerk stated that, this was in accordance with a request the Newmarket Council had sent to the engineer. The quotation was referred to the waterworks committee with power to act. The Auckland City Council notified that the necessary authority had been given for work in Mortimer Pass. The Waterworks Committee recommended .that arrangements should be made for employing local men on the work. The recommendation was adopted. An extensive report on drainage works being carried on under tins stormwater drainage loan was submitted by the engineer. Part of the. work had been held up owing to the collapse of a 24in. drain in railway property near Khyber Pass Road. The section affected would cost upwards of 1250 to replace. As the matter was urgent provision had already been made to dispose of tbo large amount of storm water in this area at a different point. The collapsed area would ultimately be cut off. A donation of £1 Is was made toward the funds of the Harbour Bridgo Association.

The inspector reported that permits for buildings valued at £2435 had been issued during June. A recommendation of tho Works Committeo that the council should acqniro an area at the corner of Carlton Gorn and Park Roads was adopted. The acquisition of the property will enable improvements to bo made in traffic conditions at the corner.
