HORTICULTURE INSTITUTE.
THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE.-
PROCEEDINGS COMMENCE TO-DAY
Hie annual conference of the New Zealand Institute, of Horticulture will officially opened in tho University College Hall at 11.15 this morning. Prior to that a civic welcome will be. tendered to delegates at the Town Hall by the deputyniayor, Mr. A. J. Entrican, in (he absence ol tho Mayor, Mr. George Baildon. As far as is known Mr. Entrican will also preside at the opening of the conference, as the Hon. G. W. Forties, Minister of .Agriculture, who was to have presided, will bo engaged with Parliamentary duties in Wellington. 'lho conference, which is tho first to he held in Auckland, will be the seventh one of tho institute. Sir George Fowhta will welcome, the delegates on behalf of tho university and Professor H. Corbiu will welcome them on behalf of the Au<kland district council. About 15 delegate;; are expected from Southern tent res" ami there will be a fairly largo attendants of local members of the institute.
Tlio clay's business will include tho president's address and the executive's report, the statement of accounts, district council reports, the. election of officers and the consideration of remits by district councils. Tho remits will deal vitli agricultural education, plant registration, the creation of national botanic gardens, tho preservation of scenery, the, extension of the citrus grant and tho conditions of competition for certain cups. For tho Banks lecture, inaugurated iti 1926 in recognition of the botanical work of Sir Joseph Banks upon Captain Cook's first expedition, the lecturer will be Professor J. 0. Sperrin-Johnson. This lectino will be delivered in the. evening and (ho lecturer will deal with tho two centuries of botanical progress from Linnaeus In Darwin. Visiting delegates will be. entertained at a social function by tho Auckland council to-morrow afternoon.
