NAVAL UNIFORMS.
Sir,—On three separate occasions during the . time that the German cruiser was in Auckland 1 was accosted by welldressed, apparently intelligent city men, and asked, "Excuse me, are you off the Emden ?" As I wear the naval uniform of H.M.' King George the Fifth, I consider these questions as personal insults, and accordingly retaliated, only to roceivo a conciliatory reply in each case to the effect that they didn't know much about the uniforms. From those remarks it will be obvious to the most untutored mind that the only uniform which concerned these gentlemen during the years of 1914-18 was the uniform price of butter-fat or wool clips. While fully cognisant of the fact that patriotism is in many cases machine-made by propaganda. yet it seemj incredible to mo that some British subjects should have a "soul so dead," as to blatantly advertise their crass ignorance of the difference between their own Navy's uniform and that of an erstwhile enemy. ' True Blue.
