NEED OF DEVELOPMENT.

Tho development of manufacturing industries and land settlement aro the needs of the country, said the Hon. G. W. Forbes, Minister of Lands, at the Wanganui Winter Show.
I The fact that New Zealand products for market in tho Homeland were super- | vised by the Government graders was i very desirable, said Mr. Forbes, and had brought thorn up to a high standard, for tho more impoi tant position Dominion products occupied at Homo tho better it was for the people of New Zealand. They had not yet reached the standard ~i ricccion in regar d to their products that was desired. For instance, in their cheese they wero below Canadian pricos. That matter, ho could assure them, was now receiving a great deal of attention at the hands of tho department. Mr. Forbes said he was keenly interested in land settlement. It had to bo realised that people living in tho country now enjoyed greater facilities in regard to motor-cars, wireless, etc., but to meet all Uic.hr luxuries tho cost was greater. Ho liked to see people havo these tilings and enjoy them Tho only way lo do so was to increase production and land settlement. This matter was before the Government. He realised the diff'ciUif? and recognised that progress would havo to bo gradual. To some people it may seem slow, but the Govorn merit would do its best to provide land for settlement. Tho Government had mapped out the programme which would havo to bo carried out if tho country was goiri>j; to be prosperous. The Minister concluded bv adding that Uieso secondary industries deserved overy encouragement.
