TAKAPUNA BOATING CLUB.
POLICE CbURT PROSECUTION.
CONDUCT OF LOTTERY ALLEGED. Arising out of an art union being conducted at the Winter Exhibition by tho Takapuua Boating Club a prosecution was brought in tho Police Court yesterday against three men connected with tho scheme. Hov Lidgard was charged with assisting in tho management of a lottory, whilo Charles George Blackwell and James Johnson Mackay were each charged with disposing of envelopes in which permission was given to tho purchaser to participate in a lottery. Mr. Vialoux stated Mr. Northcroft had been instructed to appear for defendants, but ho was engaged at tho Supremo Court for tho next fow days. Ho asked for an adjournment for a week. Chief-Detective Hammond said ho had no objection to an adjournment, provided tho club undertook not to continuo tho raffle on tho same lines as at present. Unless this were done ho would oppose tho adjournment, as ho was ready to conduct tho case immediately. Stating ho could not give any undertaking, Mr. Vialoux said tho club had conducted a raffle in tho same way for tho past two years. Mr. Hammond replied that tho system was different this year. The club had 10 salesmen at tho show selling envelopes at Is each. All tho envelopes contained a ticket in the art union, but ono in every ten also contained an order for a cash prizo of 2s 6d. It was a puro lottery. They had been given a permit for an art union. "Yes, it is a lottery," commented the magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, who pointed out that if a week's adjournment wero granted tho club would bo ablo to continuo tho sale of the tickets until tho close of tho show. Mr. Vialoux then asked for an adjournment until this morning, which was granted.
