V.R.C. WINTER MEETING.

grand national hurdles.

With no horsca hailing from Now Zealand engaged in the V.R.C. Grand National Hurdlo Knee, which event is set down for decision at Flemington to-day. thero will not. of courso. bo ho keen an interest in the result ns tf the Dominion was represented. However, holding, as the race does, tj place with the lending events of the turf in Australia, that in itself arrests attention, and so tho ncceptancea. which number 15, and which include the following, can be perused with interest -

st. lb. Bt. Ib. Valboo . . , - 10 12 Bay of Biscay 9 7 Ken tie .... 10 8 Tiki 95 Adsuni .... 10 G Ich Dicn ... 9 4 Cobrnnveil . . 10 5 W Armstrong 9 '2 May Day ... 10 5 Bnveroy ... 9 0 Adit 9 9 Sayles .... 9 0 Chumree ... 9 0 Olga Chipilly 9 0 Iloslcy ... 98 At last advices Tiki, Valbeo and Kentlc comprised the favourite division. Tiki, who has displayed good form, is a five-year-old gelding by the Melbourne Cup winner l'atrobas, and, with strains of Musket and St Simon on each side of his pedigree, there is a great deal to recommend hnn on pedigree grounds. TIIE TURF IN ENGLAND. SANDOWN PARK MEETING. Australian Press Association —United Service LONDON. July 4. At tho Sandown Park mooting to-dny tho following was the *t-sult of tho leading event PRINCESS OF WALES STAKES, Of £-i0 each, with £2OOO added; special weights with penalties; 1J miles. Baniott's b hj, 4yrs., by Blandford—Athasi 3 Four started. Fairway, won by threequarters of a lengtli from Cyclonic, who beat Athford by a head for second place. NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE. GOSSIP OF THE TRACKS. by archer. Whether tho injuries he is reported to have received through getting down on tho trip to Trentham will be serious enough to prevent Bright Land from keeping his engagements next week has yet to bo definitely ascertained Latest form has stamped the imported gelding as a hurdler of good class and suggested that he was likely to achieve more success in tho near future. Bright Land was injured when returning from Trentham in January and it will be very unfortunate for his connections if a similar mishap should put him out of action at this stage.

For two years in succession Fairy Herald has won tho Winter Oats Handicap on the final day of the Wellington Racing Club's Winter Meeting, and he is such n useful horso under winter conditions that it is anticipated he will again race well at tho coming meeting at Trentham. Only recently Fairy Herald demonstrated that ho was in form by winning very decisively at Timaru, and thereforo he is likeiy to rcccivo attention from backers iu his engagements next week. With 9.10 he is nicely placed in the Whyte Handicap and may be one of the popular fancies.

There are few more consistent jumpers than Ivawini and he is such a reliablo fencer that ho has always to bo considered when long journeys over fences aro to bo undertaken. It is reported that ho is in great heart to tackle his engagements at Trenthara and it is likely that he will make a decent showing in tho Wellington Steeplechase, although with 11.1 ho v/ill have to do a good deal better than when he carried 10.9 into second place last year. Kawini was entrained for Trenthnin yesterday oveniu,g in company with Kauri Park, Arihann and Justify.

Southern reports credit Black Mint with galloping well and this would indicate that ho is regaining his dash. As a result o£ a number of failures this season tho his fellow is now in a nice position in tho handicaps and would only havo to reproduce his old form to make an early return to tho winning list. Black Hint won tho Whyte Handicap last year under 10.7 and with 9.8 thi3 year he might again race prominently in that event. It is in his favour that he carries weight well and is also partial to heavy going.

Apparently nil has gono well with Mister Gamp sinco ho won tho Great Northern Hurdles, for ho is stated to be working with plenty of dnah in preparation for his engagements at Trcnlham, where lis its booked to contest tho Trentham Hurdles and tho Winter Hurdles. As would bo expected after his brilliant win here, Mister Gamp is in strong favour and is euro to bo well supported in his races, despite his rise in weight for his win here. With A. E. Ellis in the saddle, tho chestnut will bo well served on the score of horsemanship and will be well placed to provide a further lino on hi 3 worth.

Aborfeldy'e third in tho Mayfield Handicap at Ashburton last week demonstrated that he is in good form at present and it is expected that he will strip a very fit horso at Trentham next week. With 10.5 Aborfeldy was a close second to Gaze in the Winter Hurdles at Trentham last year, and therefore seems likely to run prominently in that race again this year, as lie 13 nicely placed with 10.0. The chestnut ran a good race over hurdles at Wanganui in May, and. as ho is better seasoned now, should bo capable of showing improved form in his next few outings over hurdles.

This timo last year Gold Curo came into prominence by winning two minor events at the Wellington Racing Club's Winter Meeting In the meantime he has won lus way out of hack company and is just tho sort to prove a good proposition for winter racing in tho open class. As ho has not had a race for some months, he might be all the better far an outing in public and possibly he might bo one to keep in mind for tho latter day 3 of tho meeting at Trentham. Gold Curo is engaged in tho principal flat handicaps at tho meeting and has 9.C in tho Whyte Handicap.

When the' tracks wero heavy fast year Bisox performed particularly well and her successes included tho Parliamentary Handicap (Trentham), tho Wintor Cup (Riccarton), and tho Avondale Cup. So far this winter sho has raced below expectations and shown no form, and porhaps it may be her turn to display improvement at any time now. Hawcra reports credit her with galloping very well lately and it 13 on the cards she will be fancied in her engagements at Trentham, wliero she is to be ridden by It. Heed. Bisox might relish the distance of tho Parliamentary Handicap (ti miles) better than tho other distances she ivill raco over at the meeting and that might be tho race where hor prospects will be brightest.

One of the Binartest hacks cngaaed at Trenthaui is Uavoring, and, although lie 'is well up in the weights in his class, ho is likely to perform with credit. At his MBt stmt he defeated a useful field with ease and probacy it will not be long before he wins his way into better company. Havering is reported to be infusing lots of dash into his work and is expected to Btrip in capital order for his coming engagements, ill which he is to be ridden by A. h. bllio.

It is stated that Glena Bay will not keep his engagements at Trenthum, as he was very lame afUr a gallop the other morning. It in unfortunate for his connections that lie should go amißS at this stage, because lie is a very promising hurdler and appeared to havo decent prospects in tho hack hurdle events at Trentham,

Tho VVaikato horseman R, Symo will ride Boomerday, Prince Lu and Iloromca at Trentham. Other ruling engagements announced for Trentham arc as follows:—A. Tinker. Paddon; H. 11. Morris, Veapcrun; T. Green, Royal Game; A. Hobson. Pantagruel, Juggle. Aurora Borealis, Kangi barto, Overhaul, and Gold Curo.
