NUMEROLOGY.
LORE OF THE ANCIENTS. BY EDNA GRAHAM MACKY. To delving into tho lore of the ancients, cue finds many treasures of thought and wisdom, many carefully-worked out theories of life rarely considered in theso clays of rush and bustle. They named tho stars, theso ancient philosophers, and charted tho heavens by a zodiac which modern scientists havo not been able to disregard or oven improve upon In tho centuries beforo Christ the Hebrews and Greeks possessed a knowledgo oi numbers and vibrations which they sought to apply to human personality. They worked on the idea that all things in tho universe vibrated to certain numbers according to a dofmitb mathematical system. We are told that even tho hairs of one's head uro a umbered'
Each letter in tlio Hebrew and Greek alphabet had a number as well as a ineauing For instance, in tlio Hebrew, A Alepn, was one and meant ox, 11, Beth, was two and meant liouso In this way every number became associated with a special significance. Pythagoras was one of the ancient philosophers who concerned himself with numerology, as the science of numbers is generally called. J will' strive to give a brief indication of tlio meanings of numbers accepted by many students
1. Number of originality and individuality, courage, adventure, dominating power.
2. Number ot tact, diplomacy, weighing one side against tlio other, sensitiveness and intuition. 3. Number of faith, innate sincerity, versatility and action. 4. Number of limitations, hard work, monotony and materialistic in fluences.
5. Number of emotion, cliango, restlessness enthusiasm, quick judgment, not stable.
6. Denotes respect; reliability, honesty, domesticity. [7. Number of loneliness, misunderstanding. reflection, sacrifice, high spirituality. E. Material success, wealth and power, leadership, initiative. 9. Favourable to the arts, mystic, humanitarian number.
Tho ancients believed that wo were not born by chance, nor named by chance, and meanings of numbers were applied to tho birth-date of an individual as well as to his name. An English table of values has been jworked out to correspond to the Hebrew and Greek alphabets. According to this, A J and S vibrato to one, D K and T vibrato to two, C L and U to threo, D M and V to four E N and W to five, F 0 and X to six, G P and V to seven, H Q Z .to eight, I and II to nine. Numbers adding to more than nine are reduced to a single digit by adding the units together. Take tlio birth date, 6th of February, 1920. This is worked out as follows: —6 plus 2 (Feb), plus 1, plus 9, phis 2, plus 0 = 20, or 2.
The number is worked out in much the
game way:—Tako the name John: J= l, v 0= 6, H— 8. N= 5, make a total of 20 again, or 2. It was supposed to bo a very favourable sign if the name, number and tho birth number worked out the same as in the above instance. Numerology is quito an interesting theory, quite a fascinating subject for a winter's evening and I pass it on for the pleasuro or profit it may be to any one inclined to tire study of ancient philosophy.
