HISTORIC INN CLOSED.
DICK TURPIN'S BEDROOM.
The Chandos Arms Hotel, at Edgware, credited with being the oldest tavern in England with the possible exception of one at Chester, has been closed, the license having been transfered to a new hotol at Colindalo, which will be named the New Chandos. The Chandos Hotel is full of historic associations dating to tho 11th contury. Tradition has it that a room at the back was used by the notorious highwayman. Dick Turpin. Downstairs there is a trapdoor let into the floor. The trap reveals a narrow opening which is said to be a subterranean passage to Canons, a mansion built by the first Duke of Chandos, the better part of a mile away. The story goes that tho passage was used as a secret approach to the mansion and was built by the duke for the purpose of carrying on his numerous orgies. A frequent visitor to tho Chandos during ' the 18th century was the famous composer Handel.
