PROSPECTING FOR GOLD.
Siir,—ln reference to your reprint from the Evening Post, Wellington, re the prospect of more gold being found, I may say I know something of Geo. Moonlight and his work—a hardy man and lucky prospector. His name is familiar with all old timers from the Lakes to Macrea's in Otago, and a household word yet on thei coast. I have worked from Ross to Reefton on various fields and from the Lvell to tho head of the Buller. I know Murchison district well, putting in about, six years there about 30 years ago. I knew Mr. Ford and all the rest of the old timers Tho Chinamen that worked left many a good claim behind them. When they got into heavy, stony ground the Chinamen could not compete with the British miner. They did not like the big boulder I know of creeks within 25 miles or so of Murchison that I believe would pay handsomely if the money was available to open them up; one in particular I know of that had a good terrace in the upper part and a good creek, where I have taken Boz. and better to the box-length, emptied into it. I prospected the upper Matakitaki, and I believe there arc terraces there that would amply repay if water was put on. The individual miner h&s desire to open this country up, but not tho capital. One thing I know for a certainty, everywhere that the Buller, Matakitaki, Maruia Mangles (ought to be spelled Mangos), or Howard makes a new course there will be good ground to work on the old bed and good beaches will bo formed in tho fresh course. Coaster.
