OBITUARY.
MR. JOHN HOUGHTON. Mr. John Houghton, aged 84, whosp death has occurred at his residence at Muriwai, was a member of one of the bestknown pioneer families in the province. He arrived from England with his father, Mr. John Houghton, in 1862, whon the Maori War was in full swing, and spent liis early youth on the family farm in tho Kaipara district and subsequently in the Waikato. In company with hi* brother-in-law, Mr. Thomas Bell, hj& took up fruit farming nt Henderson about 15 years ago, and upon the farm being later subdivided and sold ho removed to Muriwai, not far from the beach, where he lived with his son, Mr. Harold Houghton He was known as a skilled and experienced farmer, the land claiming the greater part of his attention the whole of his life. lie is survived by Mrs. Houghtun, a son, Mr. Harold Houghton, and a daughter, Miss Kathleen Houghton. There are five brothers and sisters, Mr. C. V. Houghton, of Parnell, Mr. R. W. Houghton, of Nelson, Mr. F H. Houghton, of Devonport, Mrs. J. T. Garlick, of Mount Albert, and Mrs. Charles Rhodes, of Remucra. The interment was at Humeri
MR. MURDOCH MACLEAN. A well-known resident of Wnipu, Mr. Murdoch Maclean, died in the Whangarei Hospital this week aftei a short illness at the ape of 79 years. Mr. Maclean was horn .it Boulardene Island, Caps Breton, Nova Scotia, in 1850, being the second son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Roderick Maclean. He sailed with his parents for Now Zealaiid on the Breadalhane on December 26. 1857. and arrived in Auckland on Mav 24 18 c 8 After some months in Auckland tiie family went to Waipu, taking up land at Finlayson's Brook. Mr. Maclean was a carpenter by trade, and in his younger days erected many bridges throughout thu North Inland. When about 27 or 23 years «f age lie went to Fiji and later ti, Australia.
