THE SENIOR COMPETITION.

MATCHES IN SECOND ROUND.

PONSONBY'S HIGH SCORING. The second series of matches in the second round of the Auckland Rugby League's senior competition was played on Saturday, when heavy grounds were against good footbulL The principal match, between Ponsonby and Newton, was played at Carlaw Park, where the former team outclassed its opponents and won by a big margin. The P.jnsonby backs played splendid football and each try was aided by Newton's weak defence. Newton".-? only point 3 were scored by R. Hardgrave. who is leaving uhortiy for England. On the No. 2 ground Kingsland caused a surprise by leading Devonport at half-time, but after the interval the champions played good football and eventually won comfortably. At Ellerslie City quickly scored two converted tries which decided the game against the local side. Marist and Richmond played an interesting game at Grey Lynn, victory going to Marist by 10 points. The results were as follows.:— Ponaonby. 42; Newton, 3. Pvlarist, 11; Richmond, 9. Devonport. 19; Kingsland, S. City, 10: Ellerslie. 0. PONSONBY V. NEWTON. Newton set up an early attack against Ponsonby and Hall made a great run, but Winters saved Ponsonby's forwards swept over the opposition and Gardiner and Hntt were prominent in the looEe. Hiley gave excellent support and passed to Thompson, who easily beat Herewini to score between the posts. Delgrosso converted. The Ponsonby backs gave a clever display of reverse passing when Riley raced through the centre and passed back to Delgrosso. The ball travelled to Thompson and again Riley supported a fine movement. Hall and Frauds broke asvay with the ball at toe. But Moore saved well. Then Hardgrave wa3 prominent in a fine individual effort which just failed. Fast, open play followed a good run by Thompson, but Hill saved cleverly. Delgrosso caught the Newton backs out of position and almost scored. A minute later Mclntyre set the Ponsonby backs moving and Riley made a beautiful opening and passed to Winters, who outpaced the opiposition to score a fine try. Delgrosgo failed to convert. Newton set up a succession of attacks and the backs combined well. On one occasion the ball travelled to Hardgrave who beat Moore and Delgrosso in:- a brilliant run. to score a great try. Hill failed to. convert. From a scrum near midfield Mclntyre passed to Delgrosso, who cut in nicely, but the movement lacked support. Skelton intercepted a pass and sent on to Schofield who held on too long and Hall saved. From fallback Moore raced to his three-quarters and Sc&ofield scored a good try. Delgrosso failed to convert. Thompson and Riley were associated in good combined play which carried play to Newton's twentyfive. Here Mclntyre passed to Delgrosso. who scored between the posts. He also converted. Half-time sounded with the scores: Ponsonby, 16; Newton, 3. Newton's defence was very weak in the second half and the Ponsonby backs had little difficulty in scoring. Mclntyre made a. good run through the apposition and passed to Delgrosso who scored between the posts.. His kick hit the posts. Riley was again prominent in a nassing bout which resulted in Schofield scoring. Delgrosso converted. Faga.n and Skelton led Ponsonby's forwards and Herewini made a bad error and Mclntyre had little difficulty in scoring, Delgrosso converted. Newton's tackling was very weak and Schofield broke away. After several players handled Skelton sccrred an easy try for Gardiner to convert. Ponsonby again attacked and from the loose Skelton scored between the costs. Gardiner converted. From a passing bout, Delgrosso scored but Gardiner failed to convert. The came ended with the scores:—Ponsonby 12; Newton. 3. Mr. V. Simpson, was referee.

DEVONPORT V. KINGSLAND. From the kick-off in the match, between. Devon port and Kingsland T. O'Leary placed Devonport in a good position, but H. Carter saved for Kingsland. Lucas made a good opening and passed to Angelo who cut ill niceiy. Simnis gave excellent support to a good Kingsland movement which had Devonport defending. Fast, open play followed and Kingsland surprised the spectators with effective passing bouts. The heavy ground cost Kingsland a try when Christmas slipped after he had beaten Simons. A minute Inter List broke away and passed to R. Carter who although obstructed was awarded a we!ldesierved try. Bailey failed" to convert. Devonport soon equalised when Seagar made a fine opening and passed _to L. O'Leary who scored a nice try. Simons failed, to convert. Good play by the Kingsland forwards bad Devonport on the defensive and McLoughlan made a great effort to get over. Railey was prominent for Kingsland and after beating several defenders he passed to List, who sent Christinas over near the corner. Angelo failed to convert. Stirred by its success Kingsland continued to attack. Before the interval Ruby broke away and almost scored. At half-time the scores were:—Kingsland, 6: Devonport, 3. On resuming the Devonport. backs played better football T. O'Leary made a splendid opening but- his pass to Rhodes was forward. From a scrum Seagar cut in beautifully and sent on to L. O'Leary. who raced over to score a fine try. Simons failed to convert. The Devonport forwards did jjood work in the loose and Ruby, following up fast, scored a good try, which Seagar converted. McLougien led a forward movement which carried play to Devoupori'a goal. Rhodes raced well into Kingsland'a territory before passing to T. O'Leary. who scored between ti s posts. Seagar converted. List and Simons were prominent, among the Kingsland backs and Christinas was held up on Devonport's line. From a penalty Railey increased Kingsland'a score with a fine goal. With the ball at toe Rule and Casey swept down the field, but iiucas saved cleverly. Coughlan. however, set the Devonport backs in motion and Rhodes made a good opening, which resulted in L. O'Leary scoring. The kick failed and the game ended with the scores;—Devonport, 19; Kingsland. 3. Mr. G. McCowatt was referee.

MARIST V. RICHMOND. Marist was rather lucky to defeat Richmond by the narrow margin of two points in the match at Grey Lynn Park. The fair attendance of spectators witnessed a willing game, but the sodden state of the ground militated against good football. Soon after the commencement Richmond had Marisit in difficulties, the greasy ball favouring the attackers, but Campbell saved well. Mincham kicked a penalty from a difficult position. Brisbane punted through an opening and followed up fast, but the ball was kicked into touch. Tha Richmond forwards retaliated and had Campbell bustled. Mincham missed an attempt at a penalty from nearly halfway. Shortly afterwards Marist was 'compelled to force in the face of a strong forward attack. Mincham made a clever opening and kicked behind the goal, but Bulciais ran round and secured. He was collared when about to clear, Jenkinson running up to score. Mincham missed the kick. Marist then attacked and Hickey followed up a long kick to score wide out, N. Campbell missing with the kick. Then Campbell kicked an easy penalty. A fine passing rush by the Marist backs had Richmond defending and from a scrum in tb>a corner O'Brien dived over for a try. Campbell's kick failing. Richmond took play to the other end, where Mincham had an unsuccessful attempt at a penalty. A fast follow-up by Moisley had Richmond in difficulties and a second later Btileraig dived over at the comer, Campbell missing the kick. The scores at half-time were:—Marist, 11; Richmond, 5. Marist pressed on resuming and play centred in Richmond territory for some time. Hichmond returned the attack and Mincham kicked a penalty from quarterway. Play then hovered in midlield for a spell, several promising movement* being spoilt by the backs being unable to handle the wet ball. Richmond pressed and what looked like a certain try was saved when Campbell cleverly gathered in and was forced out at the fiag. Mincham kicked a penalty from quarter-way. Marisc attacked and O'Brien Bulcrais and Moisley in turn tried to force their way over, but the defence held. A long spell of even play ensued, the game resolving itself info a battle between the opposing forwajds. Porteous put Richmond on the attack with a fine run down the line, but was pushed out at the corner Then Mincham had an attempt on the other wing, but was held up just 3hort. Richmond persisted and until the end of the game kept Marist- hemmed hi its twenty-five and was unlucky 011 several occasions not to cross the line. The final scores were:—Marist, IT ; Richmond. 9.
