BOYS ON FARMS.
THE TARANAKI SCHEME.;
ENGLISH LADS PREFERRED.
ATTITUDE OF THE FARMERS.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NEW PLYMOUTH, Friday.
At tho annual meeting of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce last evening Mr. C. Carter, chairman of the immigration committee of the chamber, made a comprehensive report of tho committee's activities, in view of criticism that the chamber desired to bring out English public school boys and , place them on farms to tho detriment of New Zealand boys.
Referring to criticism by Mr. J. S. Fletcher, M.P. for Grey Lynn, the report statod the committee had attempted to co-oporate with Mr. Fletcher in his plan to place Auckland boys on Taranaki farms. Advertisements were inserted in Taranaki newspapers inviting farmers willing to take New Zealand boys to send in applications to the secretary, but after some few days the only application was from one of tho committee's own Engljsh boys, who was needing assistance, as ho was farming on his own account and was unable to procure an English boy. It was not to be inferred from this that farmers wero not in need of boys, but that they were not in need of the boys that Mr. Fletcher offered to procuro. Mr. W. J. Freeth, of Pukearuhe, said he knew of ono boy who had been in tho country for only three years, and in addition to possessing -a motor-cycle and belonging to a lodge he had saved £2OO. He thought if boys like that could save £SOO and then some scheme could bo devised to subsidise them with a similar amount, thoy could get their own farms.
