FOOTBALL SURPRISE.
TWO LEAGUE PLAYERS.
LEADING MEN STAND DOWN.
C. DUFTY AND W. SOMERS. Considerable surprise was occasioned in Rugby Leaguo circles on Saturday last when C. Dufty and W. Somers failed to turn out for their club team, Newton, against Richmond at Carlaw Park. The reason for their absence was that thero had been some friction between Dufty and the club officials, and Somers had sided with Dufty.
Mr. P. Henry, chairman of tho management committee of tho Newton Leaguo Club, and its delegate to tho Auckland Rugby Leaguo, said tho club had held a special meeting on Thursday night last at which it was decided to cancel Dufty's afliliation to the club, and a letter to this effect had been forwarded to that player. Moro may he heard of the matter at tho meeting of tho Auckland League on Wednesday night, as it is understood Dufty intends applying for a transfer to another club.
Dufty is well known as being probably tho best fullback who has played the League gamo in the Dominion. Ho has represented Auckland and New Zealand for several years. Ho has played in only two club matches so far this season.
Somers, who is also an Auckland and New Zealand representative, has announced his intention of retiring from tho gamo.
