STATE PREMIERS CONFER*
IMPORTANT RESOLUTIONS.
POWERS OF COMMONWEALTH. (Received May 25, 12.35 a.m.) SYDNEY May 24. A preliminary meeting of the Premiers of all the Australian States was held in Sydney to-day. The Premiers are to attend ;i conference at Canberra nest weok. Various important decisions are announced. It .was decided to nrge the Commonwealth Government to impose an excise duty on petrol arriving in Australia, the proceeds of that duty to be distributed among: the States in proportion to tha petrol used in each instance. The question of compelling small coastal vessels engaged wholly in the domestic trade of any particular State to use wireless was considered. The States concerned! are to be asked to formulato suggestions.
It v;;:is resolved that steps bo taken to transfer to tho Commonwealth Government certain uniform powers in regard to the control of aviation.
Another decision was to urge upon the Commonwealth Government that tho operations of tho Commonwealth savings banks agencies should bo transferred to the States.
