APPEAL FOR FURTHER HELP.
"CONDITIONS ARE DESPERATE."

The Department of Internal Affairs, on behalf of the Wellington Famine in China Relief Fund Committee, cabled a further sum of £7OO to the International Famine Relief Committee, Shanghai, on May 15.
A cablegram has been received as follows: "The Chinese Foreign Famine Relief Committee, Shanghai, acknowledges Wellington's further contribution of £7OO. Famine conditions are desperate, and we appeal for further help.— Tong Shaoyih." A cablegram from Shanghai on May 13 acknowledging funds forwarded from Auckland has the following paragraph: "Urgently appeal for further help. The situation is desperate. Thousands are dying daily, and it is impossible to plant crops. Famine, sufferers are gating human flesh."
