POLITICAL FUNDS.
JUDICIAL AUDIT URGED.
FARMERS' UNION PROPOSAL,
A remit proposing that the funds of political parties should be subject to a special audit before a Supreme Court Judge and should be sworn to by those responsible as not having been contributed under a promise of special legislation, was discussed at the annual conference of the Auckland provincial branch of' the Farmers' Union yesterday. Moving the remit, Mr. 11. K. Batrick said it was generally understood that the funds of some political parties were not contributed for purely altruistic motives. As far as the Country Party was concerned, there was nothing to hide. (Laughter.) "In the interests o? clean government the remit should be approved," said Mr. E. L. Walker.
Mr. W. Bovd said it was quite possible for thousands of pounds to be received by a party fund without the source being shown. ••
Mr. A. E. Robinson, provincial secretary: "Even if the proposal is not practicable we should, pass it as a 'pious' resolution. It might.be difficult to trace some .moneys, but the work of one man can always, be unravelled by another." The remit was approved.
