CANADA'S POPULATION.

THE NORTHWARD TREND. DEVELOPMENT OF LARGE AREAS. rFROM OUTt OWN CORRESPONDENT.] VANCOUVER. May X. A feature of Canadian development, especially during (lie past year, is the northward trend of population. With the return by the Dominion of their natural resources ko the three Prairie Provinces, they now administer mineral and water power holdings of incalculable wealth. Manitoba lias secured a port at Fort Churchill, on Hudson Cay, and expects to make it a big wheat port, with four months' navigation each year. Oil and ecfal in Alberta, gold in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and placer gold in the Northwest Territories are coming largely under development. The north country, till recently inaccessible, now resounds to the throb, of high-powered aeroplane motors, the tumble of blasting, the puff of railway engines, and the roar of huge enow ploughs and tractors. Big tractor columns set out regularly for the Far North. What were once regarded exclusively as wheat growing areas are now recognised us mineralised areas of great value Saskatchewan is asking for an alteration of her northern boundary, to give her a seaport, for the product of rich mineral deposits. Sineltera and refineries iiv* planned to be constructed on the sK.jes of Hudson Bay, to get the benefit of cheaper water freight. Considerable railway development is taking place in the northern portions of the Prairie Provinces. Both railways are tapping now mining fields, with the intention of linking up with n great northern trunk line, which will cross the country from Fort Churchill to tho Rockies. What was considered frozen, dead territory some years ago has now come very much to life.
