WHAKATANE AFFAIRS.
BEAUTIFYING THE TOWN. FORTHCOMING WINTER SHOW. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHAKATANE, Sunday. At the annual meeting of the Whakatane Harbour Board Mr. J. W. Sumner was elected chairman. The annual meeting of the Whakatane Beautifying Society was presided over by Dr. J. C. Wadmore. The chairman's report showed that good work had been done during the year in the way of tree planting and beautifying the area in the region of Pohaturoa Rock, an historical landmark of the entrance of the town. Strong comment was made against hoardings which had been erected on the hills flanking the town. j Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows Patron, Mr. P. Kecgan; president, Dr. Wadmore; vice-presidents, Messrs. C. A. Suckling, 11. F. Smith and G. S. Bullen; committee, Messrs. G. Kent, W. E. Bridger, W. W. Smedlev, W. Sullivan, 11. A. Wilkinson, F. B. Cutler, C. G. Caisloy and E. W. Newton; hon. secretary and treasurer, Sir. 11. A. Prideaux; hon. auditor, Mr. S. V. Beckett. Preparations are completed for the Bay of Plenty Winter Show, which will be opened here next Wednesday by Mr. K. S. Williams, M.P. The show will be continued for four days. Although thero are 8000 ft. of floor space the building will be fully taxed. There will be a large number of side-shows and entertainments. The queen carnival, which is being run in connection with the show, is now in full swing, and there is considerable rivalry between the supporters of the three candidates, who represent the country, town and sports respectively. Already over £4OO has been handed in.
