CHINESE IN SYDNEY.
RECENT EFFERVESCENCE. RUBBING OF EUROPEAN EYES. The fact that Sydney has an important Chinese section in its population is realised only occasionally, says the correspondent of the Melbourne Argus. There have been times when news from China has caused a fluttering of flags over Chinese club premises in the Haymarket and one has heard of rival associations, the Nationalist (Chinese Nationalist) being the most important numerically and in regard to wealth and culture. There has been talk, too," of special work by Chinese Masonic lodges and now and again the Courts have held echoes of these. The arrival of the new Consul-General for China caused an effervescence in the quarters indicated and the effect was seen on the harbour. There was a rubbing of European eyes and much questioning when it was observed that launches flying the Chinese Nationalist flag in all sizes, and filled with men and women wearing streamers of the colours., just as the supporters of the great public schools were wearing their, during the week, were speeding toward the Heads. The objective was the steamer bringing the new Consul-General for China and this gentleman created further surprise when he talked as a British, Continental or American diplomat might.
