HAURAKI UNITED AREA.
RATING AND CLASSIFICATION
[by telegraph.—own correspondent.] TURUA, Thursday. At a special meeting of the Hauraki United Drainage Board, Mr. R. H. Heappey moved that in future all rates in connection with the old Hnuraki Board's loans be levied in accordance with the terms and conditions under which these loans were raised, and by the terms and conditions laid down by the Minister when amalgamation was granted; and further, that the classification of the whole united district bo reviewed and amended so as to remove the present cases of hardship and unfairness. It was stated that on .involved position in regard to the classification of land for drainage rating had arisen out of the amalgamation. The point at issue, as raised by Mr. Heappey, was whether the board should be financed on the la classification of land, or on the classification in £«rce prior to amalgamation, on which certain loans were negotiated. Mr. Heappey contended that the classification in force when a loan was raised must stand until the loan was paid off, Messrs. Hicks, Heappey and Green were deputed to obtain legal advice on the matter.

EXPENDITURE ON IMPROVEMENTS

At a meeting of the Waitoa Drainage Board Sir. C. McMorrari, chief engineer of the Drainage Department, advised thai £6404 had been expended to date on the Whakahoro Canal improvements work. The board's liability amounted to £3202, of which £3OOO had been paid. There were difficulties in the way of assessing compensation, which would take time to remove. It, was decided to delete the Patterson outlet drain, of, 606 yds., from the scheme, in order to reduce tho cost to the board.
