BOOKMAKER FINED £IOO.
SEQUEL TO RAID IN CITY
ASSISTANT ALSO CONVICTED.
A fine of £IOO was imposed in the Police Court yesterday on a bookmaker who was described by the police as being in a big way of business. His assistant was fined £lO. The two men were arrested as the result of a raid conducted earlier in the morning by Detective-Sergeant McIlugh, on an office in Union Buildings, Customs Street East, and during which an amount of betting material was seized. Pleas of guilty were entered by William Alfred Mackay, who was charged with keeping a common gaming house, and by Keith Wynyard Raynes, who was charged with assisting in the management of the premises. Chief-Detective Hammond said Mackay .had been before the Court before, having been fined £75 for the same offence about a year ago. Nothing was known about Raynes, who had acted as Mackay's clerk.
After the magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, had fined the two accused, Mackay made a request for the return of some of the material which had been taken from the .office. The magistrate said the matter was one for the police to arrange.
