RAILWAY TRAVEL.
PRIVILEGES EXTENDED. Facilities for parties travelling on the railways have been extended by the general manager of railways, Mr. H. 11. Sterling, who has decided to make it competent'for any stationmaster, passenger agent or business agent to issue permits authorising the issue of concession tickets. Privileges extended to pleasure parties travelling for such purposes as attending tournaments as teams, or as members of various clubs, are well known, but until now it has been necessary that three days' notice should be given of an intended trip. It is provided in the railway tarill that pleasure parties of not less than 12 members may travel first-class at second-class rates for any journey. If the journey is made the same day those who elect to travel second-class are carried at threequarters of the ordinary return fare. Previously nil applications for concession rates were submitted to the district traffic manager for approval, but under tho new system a stationmaster may grant the concession or any passenger agent or business agent has authority to issue the necessary permit.
