RESEARCH IN OBSTETRICS.

MONEY FOR SCHOLARSHIP. OFFER OF WOMEN'S' COUNCIL. [by telegraph.—press association.] GISBORNE, Tuesday. Owing to the generosity of a member who realised the need for creating interest and research in obstetrics, the Obstetrical Society was enabled last year to announce the award of a £SO scholarship. This supporter, who preferred to remain anonymous, donated enough money to endow the' scholarship for two years, and it is the intention of the society to maintain the award in future years if possible. Arrangements have beep made with the board of the Women's Hospital, Melbourne, to give the scholarship-holder six months' work as a house surgeon, and individual members of the honorary staff of this hospital have already promised to give the New Zealander every opportunity for experience. In connection with this scholarship the following remit from the Hamilton branch of the National Council of Women was moved at the Dominion conference of the council to-day by Mrs. Stevens: —"That the practical interest of the National Council of Women of New Zealand in women's welfare be shown by proposing to guarantee the £SO scholarship for one year." „ .

Miss B. E. Carnachan, Auckland, said that while in sympathy with the idea, the "Auckland branch could not support it if the £SO came out of the general fund. If, however, the branches would provide the money, Auckland would support the remit. Miss I. 51. Jamieson, Christchurch, said her , branch was in favour of the proposal. Miss E. Melville, Auckland, proposed that the following words be added to the motion Provided that the money is

found by the branches and not out of the Dominion funds." The speaker also suggested that the society be requested to award the money to a woman student if a suitable one were available.

Both Miss Melville's suggestions were adopted and the motion was passed as amended, *
