HEALTH IN SAMOA.
MAU HINDERING DOCTORS. REFUSAL TO ACCEPT ADVICE. By refusing to obey restrictions and accept advice, that section of the native population of Samoa comprising the Mau is hindering the work of the health authorities, according to Dr. L. Carrington Mail, resident medical officer at Apia for the past six years, who arrived from Samoa by the Tofua yesterday. Dr. Mail said he could not discuss the health of the people of Samoa during the past year, simply because the Mau ignored the health authorities, and it was impossible to compile statistics relating to the birth and death rates, infectious diseases and other matters. At present Samoa was threatened with an epidemic of dysentery. "If there is an epidemic I do not think it will be serious, because the natives now know how to look after themselves," he added. "Much of their pristine ignorance has been banished." Dr. Mail has retired from the service in Samoa, and will proceed to Geraldine to take over a private practice.
